#89 Inspired by tone-on-tone

I got the idea for this layout early on in the week after revisiting the page with the paper waves from last week. I wanted a lot of orange on orange.

although my vision didn't become a reality, I do like the tones of orange on this page and all the small elements that add dimension to the orange. 

The black and white pictures (you know I can't resist a photobooth) made it an easy addition to the busy background which was my starting point. I added a little of the teal glitter tape to add another color to the layout. Orange and grey just seemed too sad for this happy page. 

 

the addition of that grey paper was a given once I chose a theme for this page. The graffiti-like messages on this gorgeous paper really reinforce my story - my hidden and visible journaling have the same feel. I love it when things like that fall into place.

I added some foam dots to a lot of the embellishments to create that separation of layers and the distressed edges also helped with this.

I hope you find a way to be inspired by this. I feel this is also a good way to use up stash of a certain color because you can add a lot of elements of that color into the layers. Can't wait to see what you all come up with.

Challenge # 77 week of February 11th, 2013

Hello ladies.

This week's challenge was inspired by a free new class at two peas in a bucket: In the Mood to Scrap. It is a weekly series where several artists create a mood board for inspiration and then draw from that to create a layout. I have been super into the idea ... so I thought, why not give it a try myself?

In honor of Valentine's day this week, I decided to come up with a super lovey dovey board. But of course, you can make your layout about whatever you like. In fact, I probably won't be making it about a romantic subject since I am 100% single and don't really celebrate the holiday. But hearts and bright happy colors make me swoon so I love this time of year.

I decided to go for a mix of happy colors, hand drawn typography, ombre hearts, glitter, lots of hearts and a touch of trendy blackboard elements... not to mention a few flowers for good measure. I don't know about you but that image just makes me want to scrap. So that is your challenge. Draw inspiration from that collage - from one element or a few or all. 

You may have noticed this week fell out of sequence in our weekly switch-off. But ever since I missed my week in January I have felt off. The truth is I dislike even numbers so I wanted to get back to the odd ones and begged Lisa to let me catch up. Next week we will be back to our regular schedule.

#54 Inspired by stitching

I love stitching on paper and bought a new sewing machine recently that has yet to spy a piece of fabric! And that from someone who used to design and make evening gowns and wedding dresses for a living!

But as soon as I started scrapping I knew I wanted to add stitching details though it took a long time for me to take the leap. I love sewing a few hand-stitches when I have time, or these days whipping out the machine and trying something new. Often, I just make it simple but every now and again I go to town and find it very therapeutic - the embroidery layout featured in the prompt post is just such a layout. I love the texture and dimension it adds to the page and the detail it adds always makes me happy - if it#s a line of running stitch or a sprinkle of french knots.

Pam uses stitches for borders, for words, for titles and I always love that look whenever I see it - adding that to my list to try out sometime.

As for me this week, I was still feeling the grid groove from last week and decided to stitch a grid to fill with little bits and pieces.

With some light pencil lines to follow, this came together in no time, using my CKC August kit, Olympiad in the process.

Challenge # 51 - Week of August 6th, 2012

Hello! Welcome back to our little blog {who is almost celebrating it's one year anniversary}


the prompt for this week was born Sunday morning as I was in the car playing co-pilot, DJ and toll funds administrator. I looked down at my lap and noticed this message on the inside of my phone cover pictured below. Then I simultaneously noticed my nails, wallet and pants - and chuckled to myself. I kid you not, this photo was not staged in any way. I was wearing bright yellow pants, "Who the Shrek Are You" nail polish and had my purple wallet and pink Kate Spade phone cover out. Coincidence? Totally. Surprising? Not at all.


 


So you may have guessed it, your prompt this week is to be inspired by the phrase "Live Colorfully". In compiling my monthly collage of photos on my personal blog {here} I came to the realization that I lead quite a colorful life. The colors and patterns I use on my pages surround my everyday life. Polka dots, stripes and whimsical flower prints in all my happy colors cover everything I own. Clearly this prompt will not be hard for me. 


But if you are intimidated by color and your personal style or house decor is more muted beiges and classic whites, then I challenge you to consider these additional ways in which you can indeed live colorfully. Both prints below, as well as the slogan, belong to Kate Spade and her line.

I love all the ideas in the second print. So you don't have to limit yourself to just dressing or decorating with bright colors. The concept of "colorfully" is much bigger than that and I truly live to embody it. Let's take a little time this week to examine how we or those around us put this into practice.

#42 inspired by celebrations and Jubilee

Lisa challenged us to be inspired by celebrations this week. And to be honest, I was stumped. I have no ties to the Bristish Jubilee so that wasn't an option. And I was pleased to find that almost all other celebrations in my life had at leas been documented once. 

But I was determined to do this great challenge justice. So I just thought harder. And when the idea finally came, I was surprised it hadn't occurred to me before. Of course, there where the awful pictures from the disposable camera that had probably prevented me from scrapping this event... or the fact that it happened on not such a happy time in my life. But still, the pictures where there, the celebration had happened and the story needed telling.

to emphasize the celebration, I kept to pretty muted colors with splashes of coral and orange. What I did highlight were all the different textures: ruffles, stitching, doily. The page was just full of tiny little details I kept adding that reminded me of feeling like a princess and just pure girlishness. 

  of course, what jubilee layout would be complete without some glittery fun? this little strip of glitter tape somehow snuck it's way into this layout. 

 i added a little envelope just at the last minute to write some of the more personal thoughts about this day. 

and one of my favorite things for sure was using the sewing machine to add details to this page. although the thread was white, i feel it adds so much to the page.

I hope you were reminded of past celebrations or found new ones to document. There really is so much to rejoice about - we just have to look for it. And sometimes it comes in the form of some old, not-so-good pictures. I hope I am teaching by example that we must use those photos!

Challenge #18 Week of 12th December 2011

Sorry for the delay everyone...

Well guys, Christmas is now well and truly knocking at the door. Are you ready and organised? Or are you like me - in chaos?!?

Whatever stage of preparation you are in and however you celebrate, I'd like you take a few minutes this week to recognise some of the details that make this time of year special for you.

I wrote a post for the Counterfeit Kit Challenge blog (which will be posted on Sunday 18th)  which covers exactly this topic. In that post, I talk about the fact that I tend to make more of these detail types of pages than the event of Christmas itself because it's the details that might get lost over the years. I'm not going to forget the people who sit around our table each year but the thrill of seeing the Christmas Market for the first time each November, or the gorgeous decorations I choose each year, or the fantastically stylish window displays in the city, may well slip my mind.

 

What details will you choose to share this week? I can't wait to see this holiday season through your eyes!
